Mr. William L. McDuffie – Director (1969-1977) Shortly after Mr. McDuffie took the helm, the College’s name was changed from South Carolina Area Trade School to Denmark Area Trade School and was transferred to the South Carolina Advisory Committee for Technical Training which acted under the supervision of the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education. During the same year, the name of the college was changed to Denmark Technical Education Center. The College’s recreational facility is named in his honor as the William L. McDuffie Student Life Center. It was during this time that the College joined the State Technical College system and received new buildings for the first time since its inception.  In 1972, the Lorry H. Dawkins Residential Hall was erected. The College received the following buildings in 1975:  Solomon Blatt Hall Administrative Building, Smith Hall, the William Canty Building, the Samuel Love Faust Building, the Enrollment Services Building, and the Sciences Building. On January 1, 1975, the College was in candidacy for membership into the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (Commission on Colleges).
