Dr. Joann R. G. Boyd-Scotland – President (1993-2007) – Dr. Boyd-Scotland has been the only female president of the College. In 2004, the College received its last building on the campus, the Essie Moore Carroll and Clarence V. Lebby Library. Legend has it that she purposely scheduled an evening meeting with state persons in the College’s old library that did not have a restroom. Serving many drinks to the guests, once they required use of the facilities, she had to inform them that the library did not have a restroom.  This meeting is thought to be the impetus for the College receiving its current library.  Under her leadership, the college’s enrollment and endowment flourished. She had a reputation as a “non-nonsense impactful leader.”  Under Dr. Boyd-Scotland’s presidency, the College was approved for distance learning through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) on December 5, 1997.  Her obituary lists her as being “President Emeritus” of the College.

  • Dr. Boyd-Scotland continued furthering the college’s pursuit of development by increasing enrollment, maintaining a balanced budget and utilizing a budget surplus to renovate and refurbish buildings on campus.

  • She was a major promoter in terms of launching fundraising campaigns. Her most accomplished campaign resulted in the construction of a new library that included the Learning Resources and Technology Center.

  • Denmark Technical College endured difficult obstacles regarding budget, student enrollment and daily operations. In response to these obstacles, Dr. Boyd-Scotland boosted enrollment through promotion of the college, by providing transportation services for students and by cutting $1 million in personnel expenses.

  •  With another series of fundraising campaigns, she secured land in both Barnwell and Allendale. With that land, the college created two instructional sites for surrounding areas.
